Get Involved: Service Clubs as Key to Finding Your Niche

Posters screamed at me from all sides, each trying to convince me to join a particular club or group. How would I ever know what to choose? I still remember the overwhelmed feeling I had walking the halls as a first semester freshman. I had heard how important it is to get involved from the beginning of high school. I wanted to sign up for everything, but I knew that wasn't practical. So, I decided to narrow my list, and I think I found an excellent way to spend my time and build my resume. The answer? Service clubs.

There are many different service clubs. Some include Key Club, Interact Club, or National Honor Society. It is important to do a little investigating in order to find out which club or clubs your school offers. Talk to older students and teachers to find out which club will be the best fit for you.

At my school, the Boys and Girls Service Clubs have a reputation for being very involved both on our campus and in the community. For this reason, I chose to join Girls Service Club, or GSC. From here on I will refer to this club, since that's where my service experience lies, but keep in mind that the essence of all service clubs is basically the same- to give of yourselves and to serve others. I soon learned that GSC was the best club I could have joined. There I met a large group of girls committed to giving back to our community and our world. As high school students, we have time and energy to accomplish so much. We need to actively combat the stereotype that all teenagers are selfish.
